Useful Photographic Links

I have over time collected so many photography links that I have had to sort them into categories just to keep track. I have decided to put a selection my links here because I have found that just so many searches don't get high quality results, and it is often difficult to find just what is needed.

Some linked pages will appear in more than one category, because they deal with several aspects of photography, or the material applies equally to more than one.

While I have done my best to filter out any sites which are just plain rubbish (No comments please!) the information contained within these sites is of variable quality. Manuals may be poorly scanned, and some sites publish information, which in part at least, is just plain wrong! I will try and point out where I think information is suspect, but ultimately it is up to you to make your own judgment.

The links in the pages below include a whole lot of links to photographic techniques, photo galleries (both amateur and professional), lens evaluations, film development, darkroom working, chemistry, physics, optical technology, photometry, camera collections, honest reviews, etc. In fact anything I have come across which has some connection to photography!

It is inevitable that I will find it completely impossible to keep all these links current. So some links may not work. I would appreciate it if you send me a mail, if you find any links to sites which no longer exist. I am always finding new sites with useful information, (I found two just today!) so new additions are likely at any time.

Link Description
Photography Forums

Links to a number of forums with discussions and threads for a range of photographic topics.

Repairs These links are concerned with making repairs to various cameras. These may or may not provide service manuals.
Repair Manuals Specifically links to service and repair manuals.
User Manuals Various sites with user manual for various cameras. (These may or may not be scans of actual manufacturers manuals.)
Lens tests and reviews.

Technical/pseudo technical lens test pages, and pages showing actual images from various lenses

Film camera review links

Links to pages with information on all sorts of film cameras, including 35mm SLR's, Rangefinders, Medium and large formats.

There are a lot of sites that pop-up on searches for camera reviews, that are just sales sites. Often these have few reviews, and fewer properly objective professional evaluations of the cameras or lenses reviewed.

The links here are among the most useful ones I've found, and while I can't guarantee you will find a review of any particular camera, they are at least informative!

Digital Camera Links.

Despite being a film enthusiast, I inevitably have picked up a few links to digital cameras!

Optics links.

Links to pages that explain the principles of image formation by lenses. Lens equations, and types of lens are covered, and links which explain diffraction etc.

Film chemistry and development

Not pages primarily on darkroom techniques, more about the chemistry, and film development formulations and development. This inevitably includes the dark arts of printing and enlarging!

Exposure

There is always a lot of talk about 'right' and 'wrong' exposure and how to get it right.

These pages deal with exposure issues, covering topics such as zone exposure, compensation, lighting, flash photography, filters etc.

Composition

And you thought it was just sheer talent!

OK, talent sure does help a lot, but there are a number of rules of composition, which like the rules of musical harmony, can be used to great effect even by the most mediocre student!

(In fact a huge amount of what is passed off as 'talent' is the result of diligent study, and many a true talent is wasted for lack of it!)

Camera collections

Some folks just can't resist putting their camera collections online.

Just as well really, as it's a great reference source for identifying exact models etc.

There are also a few online museum catalogues often professionally maintained, which are really brilliant resources for finding out about vintage cameras!

Photo Galleries

Some picture galleries from both amateur and professional photographers alike.

I have included stock photography sites as well here, and a lot of sites with lens test sample pictures, which are often quite good photo's too.

It's always good to look at other people's pictures to get ideas.
